Transformed by Grace and Renewed in Spirit

The Annual Retreat of the FMA Sisters of Kolkata province was held from 29 May to 5 June 2026 at Auxilium Convent, Kurseong. The retreat was attended by 40 participants, two Sisters from Guwahati Province, one from Shillong Province, and one from Rome. It was a grace-filled time of prayer, silence, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Before the retreat began, Sr. Leelamma, the Provincial, encouraged the sisters to use this sacred time to deepen their relationship with God and renew their commitment to their vocation and mission.

The retreat was preached by Fr. Sam Thomas, a well-known Vincentian retreat preacher from Emmaus retreat center, Kolkata. The theme of the retreat was “Intimacy with the Lord.” He emphasized that the heart of consecrated life is a personal relationship with Jesus, nurtured through prayer, meditation on the Word of God, devotion to the Holy Rosary, and openness to the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Drawing inspiration from biblical figures, especially Peter, he highlighted the transforming power of encountering Christ. And one of the most profound reflections of the retreat focused on the Journey to Emmaus. Fr. Sam explained how the two disciples, burdened by disappointment and confusion, encountered the Risen Lord on their journey. This passage became a powerful invitation for the participants to recognize Christ’s presence in their own lives, especially in moments of uncertainty and discouragement. He also stressed that after encountering the Risen Lord, the disciples returned to Jerusalem, the place where the community of believers was gathered. Specially, the preacher invited the sisters to imitate the Emmaus disciples by continually returning to the Lord, remaining at His feet in prayer, and allowing His Word and Eucharistic presence to transform their lives. Just as the disciples were sent back renewed and strengthened, the sisters too were called to return to their communities and ministries with renewed zeal and conviction.

The evening sessions featured inspiring testimonies from lay missionaries and evangelizers from India and abroad. Their experiences of sharing the Gospel in challenging situations encouraged the sisters to deepen their missionary spirit and commitment to evangelization. The retreat concluded on 5 June 2026 with a Thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration. The sisters expressed their gratitude to Fr. Sam for his spiritual guidance, to Sr. Leelamma for her encouragement, and to the community Sisters and supporting staff for their hospitality and support. The retreat was a profound experience of renewal, helping the sisters grow in intimacy with the Lord and return to their mission with renewed faith, enthusiasm, and love for Christ and His Gospel.

Forever His: Perpetual Profession of Sr. Anima Kujur and Sr. Martha Minj

The Province of Kolkata witnessed a deeply grace-filled and joyous occasion on 26 May 2026, as Sr. Anima Kujur and Sr. Martha Minj made their Perpetual Profession of religious vows at Auxilium, Barasat, dedicating their lives completely to God in the spirit of St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello.

The solemn Eucharistic Celebration began at 10:30 a.m. with a graceful entrance dance performed by the Aspirants, creating a prayerful and festive atmosphere for the sacred celebration. The Holy Eucharist was presided over by Most Reverend Emeritus Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, in the presence of priests, religious sisters, family members, friends, and well-wishers who had gathered to witness and celebrate this special moment of commitment and faith.
In his inspiring homily, Archbishop Thomas D’Souza emphasized that religious vocation is a call from God and not based on human greatness or worldly qualities. He reminded the congregation that “we are called by God not because we are rich, intelligent, or great, but because we are chosen by Him to carry out His mission.” He further explained that God chooses each person as they are and gradually moulds them according to His will and ways. Stressing the beauty of consecrated life, he said that religious vocation is a total surrender to God, where one’s life becomes deeply united with Him in love and service.
Following the homily, the rite of Perpetual Profession was conducted in a solemn and prayerful atmosphere. Sr. Anima Kujur and Sr. Martha Minj publicly professed the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty, and obedience for life, offering themselves entirely to God and committing themselves fully to the congregation’s mission. The sacred rite was marked by deep devotion, gratitude, and joy.
After the Holy Mass, a felicitation programme was held in honour of perpetually professed sisters. The celebration was filled with joy and fraternity as the Aspirants and Postulants sang congratulation songs during the cake-cutting ceremony and expressed their happiness through vibrant cultural dances. Adding colour and cultural richness to the occasion, the Pre-Aspirants performed a beautiful Khasi dance as a symbol of joy, thanksgiving, and celebration.
The entire programme reflected the spirit of gratitude and unity among all who were present. The celebration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Sr. Anima Kujur and Sr. Martha Minj, who expressed their sincere gratitude to God, the congregation, their families, and all those who supported them in their vocational journey.
