The pilgrimage commenced with recital of prayers with stop over for personal needs and coffee and they reached the first destination velankanni at about 6.30a.m. Hotels were not available due to novena days of the feast of  Velankanni  Our Lady.  Sr. Stella with the help of her brother in law managed to procure 3 hotel rooms near  the church.  After quick wash up and breakfast they proceeded to the velankanni campus. The first place stopped was the largest church in the campus Morning star church the newest church structure built in 2013 where we participated in the mass in progress in Malayalam.  Then visited the various apparition locations at various points of time, Our Lady’s tank, Oil distribution counter and reached the main shrine of Our Lady of Good health.   Although crowded, some squished in to see the   Tamil Mass which was going on and others participated in the Hindi Mass on the first floor Chapel.  After the mass People were rushing so the sisters and other pilgrims moved and they witnessed the ceremonious flag hoisting on the flag pole   with band and electronic fireworks with booming sounds.  As it was almost 1p.m arrangements were made for lunch in south Indian Hotel.  The blazing sun and heat forced the pilgrims to take scanty hours of rest.  After cup of tea and coffee they   proceeded to the original  church to recite a rosary and get blessings.  Beach and purchase of some mementos was next in line where some of them became untraceable.  After long searching all were united for supper. At 10a.m the onward journey to Kerala started with short stopovers on the way.   Early morn we entered Kerala and   enjoyed the pristine beauty of nature the greenery, the attractive hillocks of tea gardens and gushing   waterfall.  The travellers could not resist to stop and watch the  spouting waterfall and had a cup of hot coffee and banana fritters called Pazhampori in Malyalam to drive away the wearisome travel fatigue.  They reached their destination Elegance hotel Kidanoor owned by Sr. Rosina’s nephew Binoy who has sponsored the entire Kerala trip.  After two days of night travel to Velankanni and   Kerala the air-conditioned hotel with all amenities was dreamland for all.  After a splendid breakfast all took time for refreshing and taking the needed rest.  Sr. Stella and Sr. Rose Ezarath left for their homes with the waiting family members as they had some work to accomplish.  At about 1p.m they proceeded in a traveller to Sr. Rosina’s nephew Binoys house where they enjoyed a sumptuous meal and the warmth of the family members.  They also visited the house of   another nephew   Benny’s house two minutes away. From there they proceeded to St. Mary’s Church  Bharananganam, where the mortal remains of St. Alphonsa is entombed.  They visited the tomb and prayed and procured some souvenir and returned to the hotel for supper and the deserved night sleep.

6th was a memorable day visiting the places of Blessed Kunjachan in Ramapuram and  St.Chavara Kuriakose pilgrim centre  in Mannanam. Ample time was spent in praying, photographs before going for lunch in the hotel. No visit is complete without marketing for the specialities of the place so  at 2p.m the vehicle took them to the shopping centres where the teachers purchased sarees, Dhothys and towels specialities of Kerala. At 6p.m  they enjoyed tea and delicious snacks in Sr. Rose Ezarath’s sisters house  where all her sisters and brothers families had gathered to greet all the sisters and Salesian family. Tea and  varied snacks were sufficient for supper so they directly went to the hotel rooms for rest.  On 7th Morn the pilgrims bid farewell to the elegance hotel and the owner and other employees for their services and  travelled to Chalakudy. The first stop over was at Sr. Stella’s home for the onam festival lunch.  They were welcomed with towels and roses by the grand nieces, nephews, sisters, sister-in-laws, brothers, brother in.laws and her elderly parents both octogenrians.  The sisters of Sr. Stella and she dressed in onam costumes did the Thiruvadhira a dance around Flower designs to welcome the sisters and as a part of Onam celebrations.  The family served the Onam lunch on customary banana leaves with numerous vegetarian dishes ending with payasam and pappad.  After the meal they visited the places of Saint Mariam Theresa the founder of Holy Family sisters in Puthenchira  who was canonized 13  October 2019, St. Euphrasia Eluvathingal  a Carmelite nun from Trissur canonized on 23rd Nov 2014, Holy land in Chalakudy Church. From there the pilgrims went to Matha book store in karukutty where all purchased sufficient religious articles and moved to hotel harbour again belonging to Bijoy and company.

On 8th Morning everyone was anxious to see the cherai beach but to their disappointment there were no beach except granite boulders kept to prevent land erosion and destruction of the houses from strong seismic waves as happened during the  tsunami. Although they went to close by churches for mass timing did not suit.  En-route to Ernakulam they visited the famous Our  Lady of Ransom church at Valarpadam island raised to national shrine of Our Lady. The picture of the Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus, installed at the top of the main altar of the Vallarpadam Church, was brought by Portuguese merchants under the leadership of Vasco da Gama in 1524. ( In 1676 the old Church, which was known as the Church of the Holy Spirit, founded by the Portuguese missionaries, was destroyed by a heavy flood, and the picture was found floating in the backwaters. Nobody except Paliyath Raman Valiyachan, the Prime Minister of Maharaja of Cochin, could recover it. The present church at Vallarpadam is built on land donated by Paliyath Raman Valiyachan. A sanctuary lamp which he donated has been burning day and night from 1676 onwards in his honour. In May 1752 a miracle is believed to have taken place which made Vallarpadam a centre of pilgrimage. In Vallarpadam there was a young Nair Lady named Meenakshi Amma, who was a member of a noble family called Palliyil Veedu. Together with her son she was sailing to Mattancherry. There arose a storm and the boat capsized. Meenakshi Amma and her son went deep down into the backwater. She promised to devote the rest of her life to Mary’s service if she and her child were saved. It was a promise she kept. On the third day, as per instructions in a dream, the parish priest asked the fishermen to cast net in the river, and Meenakshi Amma and her son were rescued. After her death, the church put up the picture of Meenakshiamma and her child alongside the painting of Mary.)

Binnoy’s close collaborator  subin  brought Banana chips sent by Binnoy which Sr. Rosina distributed to all the sisters, teachers and ADMA memebrs. Binnoy and Subin took them to Lulu Mall the biggest in Asia for a sumptuous supper.  After supper all took the chance to express their gratitude to Binnoy who had subsidized all the expenses of food, lodging and travel in Kerala pilgrimage.  From there they directly went to Ernakuam junction to catch the Shalimar Express to return to the city of Joy Kolkata.  Although this time they were scattered in 3 compartments they often visited one another and had a pleasant journey back home. The centenary and pilgrimage troupe will ever remain grateful to God, Sr. Leelamma the provincial who planned this trip and to all who contributed for this pilgrimage and will cherish the  indelible memories of  these spiritual and glorious moments.

Inauguration of Prayer Ministry in the Province of Mary Help of Christians, Kolkata

As the FMA INDIA, edges forward with great enthusiasm to celebrate the centennial of the FMA presence in India, the Province of FMA INC is set to erect a new milestone with the commencement of a  new ministry in the Province. On 29 August 2022, is intertwined with the golden thread in the heart of seven elderly sisters Sr. Philomena Chirammal, Sr. Susanna  Korah, Sr. Silvina Kujur, Sr. Elizabeth  Makil, Sr. Mary Sarkar, Sr. Anna Varkey, and Sr. Juliana Rozario who molded a  power group in the Province heeding to the invitation of Sr. Paul “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances;  for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. (1 Thess. 5:16-18)

The inauguration of the ‘Prayer Ministry’ was held at Auxilium, Provincial House, Dum Dum with an introductory talk by Provincial Sr. Leelamma Palliparambil, driving home the purpose and motivation of the new venture and whose dream was realized today. This was followed by a warm and solemn welcome ceremony and a moment of prayer.

The animation of the day was then taken up by the resource person of the day Rev. Fr. Ramesh Cherian SDB. He commenced the session saluting the seven pioneers of the ‘Prayer Ministry’ for their experience and the beautiful life they lived for God, young people, and others, also bringing home the memory of some great Salesians who paved the way in his life.  During the homily Fr. Ramesh exhorted the sisters to be bread broken for the sisters of the community and in the Province by raising them in the chalice all that they undergo in their body mind and soul. The day’s schedule drew to a close by drawing up a few lines of action to be powerful intercessors in the community and in the Province.

It is wonderful to hear from Sr. Mary Sarkar, one of the members of the prayer ministry, “I renewed myself and received a lot of insight to be like Anna and Simon in the Bible and also to make every action into prayer.” This is what Sr. Elizabeth Makil had to say at the end of the day, ‘I realized that prayer is not a difficult task because it is a continuity of all that I do in the company of Lord Jesus”.  Sr. Juliana Rozario expressed her feelings by saying, “We are indeed blessed and happy that God has chosen us to be part of a Prayer Ministry group. It is a great realization that every struggle, suffering, pain, and aspirations of us in offering to Jesus will turn into prayers that will rise to Heaven.”

A SPIRITUAL SOJOURN WITH THE LORD

The Catholic students of classes IX -XII of Auxilium Convent School, Dum Dum, had the privilege of making an enriching retreat in the Bandel Church Retreat Centre from 12 to 15 August 2022. Fr. Remesh also explained to the students the history of Bandel, Basilica after which there was a candle-lit Rosary procession to the main balcony. The counseling sessions were offered by Sr. Nirmal Jyoti to all the students. The informative and soul-stirring video on the life of the saint Maria Goretti drew the attention of the students to the need to possess a pure body as well as a pure soul.

It was a fruitful retreat for the students as they received the infilling of the Holy Spirit and abundant blessings from God. The students resolved to keep the fire burning in their hearts so that they could become messengers of the good news.

Salesian Sisters (Auxilium) of Kolkata Province celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Foundation of the Institute

In communion with the entire Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Province of Mary Help of Christians, Kolkata (INC) celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Foundation of the Institute with great enthusiasm and splendor. Every community in the province raised a hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God for the wonders He has worked in the history of our Institute, in the province, in the communities and in the life of each Sister. On 5th August 2022, the Sisters renewed their commitment to live with renewed radicalism and zeal as a living “monument of gratitude” to Mary Help of Christians. The celebrations carried out through liturgy, prayer moments, events and variety programmes along with the Educating Communities and representatives of the Salesian Family, at community, school, educational centres, parish and diocesan level were concrete means in making known the Institute far and wide.

Given below are some highlights which reveal the fervor of the communities, welcoming the mandate made to Mary Domenica Mazzarello, “I entrust them to you” during these 150 years of the Institute and 100 years of FMA presence in India.

Auxilium Bandel: The morning of 5 August 2022 marked an important day of celebration for the community of Bandel as the FMA Family all over the world celebrated the 150th foundation of our Institute. On this day Bandel Community was privileged to have two Golden Jubilarians, Sr. Rose Ezarath and Sr. Teresa Thudianplackal to add extra joy in their celebration. The day began with the placing of the key at the feet of Mary by the Superior of the house Sr. Rose Ezarath. The solemn Holy Eucharist at 11am gave a perfect note to the celebration of the 150th anniversary and the Golden Jubilee. Several salesian family members, teachers, students and other close by religious communities joined in the historical event. After the homily the Sisters renewed their commitment and the Jubilarians were garlanded. The hymn Veni Sponsa Christi gave a perfect touch to the crowning ceremony of the jubilarians. Holy Eucharistic  celebration was followed by a felicitation program and fellowship meal.

Auxilium Barasat: The prodigious celebration of 150glorious years of the foundation day of the Institute brought great joy and enthusiasm in the hearts of every Daughter of Mary Help of Christians. The festivity of 5th August 2022 began at Auxilium Barasat with the vigil service of surrendering each one’s life with a lighted lamp and accepting Mary as the Superior by submitting the house key by the animator. Presenting a brick each reminded each Sister to be an inseparable part of living monument, imbibing the qualities of  Mary our mother, and to be Don Bosco’s gratitude at all times.

The community held a triple celebration: 150th years of foundation Day, Diamond Jubilee of Sr. Elizabeth Makil and the profession day nine Sisters from Aspirantate and school community of Barasat. The holy Eucharist was solemnized by Fr. Davis Veliyan SDB and 10 con-celebrants and participated by the sisters, boarders, aspirants, postulants, and 85 past pupils of Sr. Makil along with their families. The celebration continued with a short felicitation programme by the boarders, pre-aspirants, aspirants, and postulants. The past pupils showed their love and gratitude by sharing their sweet memories and a festal song. Festivity concluded with a sumptuous meal.

Barasat School also held AUXI AURA 2022 with a plethora of creative events for 20 schools coming together for a day with the theme, Gioioso Centenario dell’ Eredita’  signifying “Joyful Centenary of Inheritance” to mark the 150th of the Foundation and the centenary of the FMA presence in India. The fiesta achieved success in all the 26 events where the budding youths displayed their remarkable talents and were awarded with prizes and certificates. AUXI AURA portrayed the best form of holiness and happiness and the gala event came to an end with a mellifluous rendition of a musical performance enjoyed by everyone.

Auxilium Aspirantate: In the Aspirantate the 5th of August dawned with a festive atmosphere. They began the day dedicated to the renewal of our first ‘yes’, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the foundation of our Institute, thanking Mary for having called them to a Congregation that belongs entirely to Her, and placed themselves in Her hands imploring Her to guide their every step so that they may remain faithful to Him until the end of their life. With the same trust and confidence of Mother Mazzarello in Mary, Sr. Rosalia Tirkey the Animator placed the keys of the Tabernacle and of the House at the feet of our Blessed Mother, Help of Christians.

They stopped for a while around the Charism of Don Bosco  and Mother Mazzarello to drink deeply the “Spirit of the Origins” as it was narrated by Sr. Rosalia, pledging to continually ‘return to Mornese’, to mirror themselves in the genuine holiness of Mother Mazzarello and our first sisters. Aspirants gave expressions as they presented “She the first, She the leader”, whom her daughters desire to emulate as they move into the next century. At 11.00 a.m they participated in the Eucharistic Celebration in communion with the Sisters of  Auxilium School Barasat to celebrate the triple milestones of FMA presence in the world, in India and the diamond Jubilee of Sr. Elizabeth Makil. At an opportune moment the Sisters of both the communities renewed their vows, reminding those present that they not only have a glorious history to remember, but a great story to tell: they left everything to follow Christ on the path of the evangelical counsels to witness to the young the wonders God accomplishes in those He loves. After the felicitation and jubilation,  the Postulants, Aspirants and Pre-Aspirants took the audience down the memory lane of the arrival of the 6 pioneering missionaries to India. It was a mesmerising performance. The day came to a close singing the praises of our Blessed Mother and recalling mother General’s message, “Call to Holiness.”

Auxilium Dum Dum:  The community of Dum Dum celebrated the 150the Foundation of the Institute on 17 July to witness the renewal of the commitment in the parish with the parishioners of St. Patrick’s Dum Dum. It was kept in two moments:  in our chapel and in the parish. This day was a red letter day in the annals of Auxilium Dum Dum for it was dedicated to renew the ‘yes’ together with the entire institute. The community had prepared for this event with three months preparation on the themes given by the centre: the Constitutions, a gift of Mary, the Trinitarian horizon in our Constitutions, the Christological horizon in our Constitutions, and one week of intense preparation through liturgical animation on appropriate themes. The first moment of the day commenced with prayer service animated by Sr. Lily Perumpettikunnel. The introduction on the great event of the 150th anniversary enabled each sister to say her yes like Mary at her annunciation when the angelus was sang. The great act of Mother Mazzarello placing the key at the feet of Mary was well explained. The hymn “At thy feet O Virgin Mother” was sung when the provincial Sr. Leelamma Palliparambil and the animator Sr. Stella Potteparambil placed keys of the house gate and of the chapel at the feet of Mary. The lauds continued with commentaries and hymns sang with great fervour conscious of re-dedicating with greater commitment.

The second moment of the celebration took place at St. Patrick’s church at 8.30am English mass in the presence of the faithful and educating community. The Sisters had prepared the church with the caption below the altar “150 Anniversary – FMA Foundation” and also with artistic flower arrangements and the pictures of Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello on stands in the sanctuary.  At the outset Sr. Lily read a beautiful commentary on the origin of the institute spread all over the world in 97 nations and how it has reached 150th year  and 100 years in India.  The young girls of our school led the sisters and the celebrant to the altar with a prayer dance. In his homily the celebrant Fr. Dominic Kishore shared the impact of his experience with the Salesian sisters. After the Homily, Sr. Stella gave a short instruction on the renewal of the vows on this occasion. All the sisters arrayed in a line pledged the formula of the vows led by Sr. Leelamma.  The Sisters thanked Fr. Dominic Kishore who celebrated the mass and all the faithful. People appreciated the institute and its presence in St. Patrick’s parish.

On 3rd August 2022 Auxilium, Dum Dum had great preparation for the celebration of the 150th foundation of the Institute through a well prepared penitential service. On 4th of August students, teachers and sisters were bubbling with FMA joy with the display of ‘CAPS 150’ in the playground singing the Centenary Anthem. In the evening there was the vigil service, joining with the FMA world to thank God for the gift of the Institute. At the dawn of 5th August, the solemn twin celebration took place: 150th anniversary of the Institute and the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Sr. Silvina Kujur. A meaningful morning prayer led the Sisters to experience the spirit of joy and gratitude to God and our Blessed Mother. The Eucharistic Celebration was solemnized with an introduction the Provincial Sr. Leelamma Palliparambil carrying the replica of the Living Monument of the Institute consisting of the FMA of the 5 continents. The presence of the members of the Salesian Family – SMI Sisters, Cooperators, ADMA, Teachers, young people and the relatives of Sr. Silvina – added colours and joys to the celebration. Fr. Dominic Kishore Munda, the assistant Parish Priest officiated the Holy Mass. In his homily he invited the participants to remain always faithful as living monument of gratitude to Mary Help of Christians. After the Holy Eucharist greetings and felicitation were offered to Sr. Silvina and all present enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast together.

Auxilium Kalyani: The community of Auxilium Kalyani woke up with great sentiments of praise and gratitude to God for inspiring our founders to begin the congregation 150 years ago and for the prodigious growth of the Institute worldwide. The prayer moment was well animated expressing our love and thanks for all that has been done through the intervention of Mary Help of Christians and for the docility of our founders, St. John Bosco and St. Mary Dominica Mazzarello. They bgan this celebration on 31st July when they proclaimed the “Yes” to the Lord by renewing the Vows in St. Sebastian Catholic Church Kurtumgarh. The community expressed gratitude to the Parish priest. Dushmonth Nayak and Fr. Aswin  Baliarsingh  the assistant parish priest for granting them the beautiful opportunity to renew their Religious profession during the Sunday Eucharistic celebration.

On the 4th August evening the community celebrated the penitential service. On 5th August 2022 they had a well animated morning prayer at 6.00 a. m. during which Sr. Theyattil Annie the animator of the community placed the house key at the feet of the image of Mary Help of Christians, symbolizing Mary Our Blessed mother as the head and Superior of the community as Mother Mazzarello felt. The Holy Mass was celebrated at 9.30 a.m. by six priests the main celebrant being Fr. Dushmonth Nayak the parish priest of Kurtumgarh. Fr. Annual retreat “Come apart and rest a while”

The Retreat for the aspirants was held in the Aspirantate – Bamunmura from 20-23 July 2022. Rev. Fr. Robi Sarkar SDB, preached the retreat on the theme “: “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.” 1 Corinthians 1:27. Provincial Sr.Leelamama Palliparambil exhorted the 35 candidates to spend the days in close intimacy with Jesus. One of the aspirants says, “We began our retreat with much enthusiasm and in the Spirit of recollection. It was a wonderful experience for all of us to spend our time with the Lord praying and reading the word of God”.

On the first day, of the retreat, the talks and prayer moments were based on the topic “God’s call”. We considered our call which was given to each one of us in different forms, of our lives. Whether it is in Religious life or in marriage, it is a call to which each one of us had to respond; and remain faithful until the end of our lives. Every day our day ended in the adoration to the Blessed Sacrament which we were helped to spend fruitfully.

At the end of the retreat, this is what echoed from the aspirants: “It was simply a wonderful experience for each one of us. We praised God, thanked God, and made petitions to God. We were helped to be reconciled with God and to one another. We were helped to forgive others. After being reconciled with God we were helped to make our resolutions, how we could grow deeper in our loving relationship with Jesus”.

As we concluded the retreat Fr. Robi reminded us that our spiritual retreat began the day we ended. So, all of us have started our journey with the Lord in earnestness and enthusiasm to be faithful to Him, who loves us and cares for us.

The Salesian Sisters (FMA) celebrates the 150th anniversary of their Foundation at St. Patrick’s Church, Dum Dum

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), on Sunday 17 July 2022, the Provincial House Community of Auxilium Convent, Dum Dum along with the Provincial Sr Leelamma Palliparambil FMA, renewed their commitment of fidelity to the call of the Lord during the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. Dominic Kishore, in the Parish of St. Patrick’s Church Dum Dum, in the presence of the parishioners, children and young people.

The worldwide Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (also known as the Salesian Sisters) celebrates its 150th anniversary of its foundation on 5th August 2022! This year they also celebrate 100 years of their presence in India. On this occasion they decided to renew their Religious Vows publicly in the presence of the parishioners of Dum Dum.

St. John Bosco founded the Institute as a living monument of his gratitude to Mary Help of Christians for all the graces he received through the intercession of Mary. It was founded in 1872 in Mornese, Italy, when St Mary Domenica Mazzarello, Co-foundress, with the first group of 11 young women, became Salesian Sisters in the presence of St. John Bosco, Founder. With the direct intervention of Mary Help of Christians, the Salesian charism has spread throughout the world as a gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church and the salvation of young people. They are the largest Congregation of women religious with over 11,500 Sisters around the world, serving young people, the poor, and the young at risk, in 97 countries.

The Salesian Spirit has prevailed through the times and is encompassed in Don Bosco’s Preventive System that strives to educate youngsters through Reason, Religion and Loving kindness. The 150th anniversary of the foundation, the centenary of FMA presence in India and the 62 years of their presence at Dum Dum, were an occasion for them to renew their gratitude to God for His fidelity and to plan for the future with hope!

The 150th anniversary is a time to be grateful for the existence of so many FMA Sisters who gave their lives until the end of their days, for the life of the numerous lay collaborators who accompanied them in the mission to the young, for the former students who brought to the world what they received in their homes and institutions, for the good and humble people of the origins who made the charismatic reality possible for them to reach out to the people of Dum Dum and around in the Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello way.

During the holy Eucharistic celebration the Sisters and the parishioners thanked Mary Help of Christians for walking along with them as Mother and Helper, for being a living presence in their communities and pastoral ministries, for strengthening their commitment to educate the young, and be a sign and expression of God’s foreseeing love among young people.

The Sisters expressed their gratitude to the parish priest Rev. Fr. Irudayaraj, Fr. Dominic and all present for joining them to thank God and Mary Help of Christians as they renewed their Religious Profession during the Sunday’s Eucharist.
